Kenya’s Betting Tax Reforms Takes Effect

Kenya’s newly enacted Finance Act, 2025 has introduced key changes to how betting and gaming activities are taxed.

As of today:

  • Excise Duty is now set at 5% on wallet deposits, down from the previous 15% on wagers.
  • Withholding Tax on winnings has been replaced with a 5% tax on withdrawals, down from 20%.

These reforms apply to all operators licensed under the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act and are expected to simplify tax compliance while easing financial pressure on both customers and businesses.

The Kenya Revenue Authority is providing ongoing support for implementation through its Business Application Support Team.
